Infestation - External and Internal

External and Internal

Infestations can be classified as either external or internal with regards to the parasites' location in relation to the host.

An external ectoparasitic infestation is a condition in which organisms live primarily on the surface of the host (though Porocephaliasis can penetrate viscerally) and includes those involving mites, ticks, and head lice.

An internal endoparasitic infestation is a condition in which organisms live within the host and includes those involving worms (though swimmer's itch stays near the surface).

Medically, the term infestation is often reserved only for external ectoparasitic infestations while the term infection refers to internal endoparasitic conditions.

Famous quotes containing the words external and/or internal:

It can be fairly argued that the highest priority for mankind is to save itself from extinction. However, it can also be argued that a society that neglects its children and robs them of their human potential can extinguish itself without an external enemy.
    Selma Fraiberg (20th century)

The real essence, the internal qualities, and constitution of even the meanest object, is hid from our view; something there is in every drop of water, every grain of sand, which it is beyond the power of human understanding to fathom or comprehend. But it is evident ... that we are influenced by false principles to that degree as to mistrust our senses, and think we know nothing of those things which we perfectly comprehend.
    George Berkeley (1685–1753)
