Indian City USA

The Indian City USA Cultural Center, formerly known as Indian City USA, was an outdoor museum in Anadarko, Oklahoma. According to the tour guides, it is the only authentic reconstruction of American Indian dwellings and way of life in the United States. The construction of the housing units was done under the supervision of the Department of Anthropology from the University of Oklahoma. Reconstructed dwellings reperesent many of the tribes from the Southwest; including Caddo, Cheyenne, Wichita, Pawnee, Navaho, and Apache.

The museum was organized by the citizens of Anadarko in 1954. The museum is located on the site of a massacre of the Tonkawa Indians during Civil War by Shawnees and other Indians. It is on land occupied by the former Kiowa, Apache, and Comanche Reservation.

In addition to the outdoor displays, Indian City USA offers guided tours, Indian dancing, Indian arts & crafts, and the Indian City Museum. Nearby is site of the annual American Indian Exposition, the Southern Plains Indian Museum, and the American Indian Hall of Fame.

The museum is currently owned by the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma.

According to the website Leisure and Sports Review (LASR), the museum is closed. No website for the museum can be found.

Famous quotes containing the words indian, city and/or usa:

Most of the folktales dealing with the Indians are lurid and romantic. The story of the Indian lovers who were refused permission to wed and committed suicide is common to many places. Local residents point out cliffs where Indian maidens leaped to their death until it would seem that the first duty of all Indian girls was to jump off cliffs.
—For the State of Iowa, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

I never walked through the streets of any city with as much satisfaction as those of Philadelphia. The neatness and cleanliness of all animate and inanimate things, houses, pavements, and citizens, is not to be surpassed.
    Frances Wright (1795–1852)

It is hereby earnestly proposed that the USA would be much better off if that big, sprawling, incoherent, shapeless, slobbering civic idiot in the family of American communities, the City of Los Angeles, could be declared incompetent and placed in charge of a guardian like any individual mental defective.
    Westbrook Pegler (1894–1969)
