Architecture

Although Dr. Edmonds had initially opposed the building of an elaborate church building, his attitude and that of the congregation eventually changed and in October 1922, the first phase of a neo-gothic structure on Birmingham's Highland Avenue was built. The facility was designed by the Birmingham firms of Warren, Knight and Davis, and Miller & Martin, and is in the English perpendicular style. The sanctuary itself was completed in 1926 and includes stained glass windows designed and manufactured by Nicola D'Ascenzo, noted artist and stained glass maker of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and said to be some of his finest work. The church has recently purchased the facility formerly known as the Christian Science Church, 3116 Highland Avenue, Birmingham, Alabama, to serve as additional space for ministries to youth and children, including the STAIR Reading Program.

Famous quotes containing the word architecture:

The principle of the Gothic architecture is infinity made imaginable.
    Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772–1834)

In short, the building becomes a theatrical demonstration of its functional ideal. In this romanticism, High-Tech architecture is, of course, no different in spirit—if totally different in form—from all the romantic architecture of the past.
    Dan Cruickshank (b. 1949)

Defaced ruins of architecture and statuary, like the wrinkles of decrepitude of a once beautiful woman, only make one regret that one did not see them when they were enchanting.
    Horace Walpole (1717–1797)
