Hyderabad Metro - Cost

Cost

The official estimated cost of the project stands at 14,132 crore (US$2.57 billion). The Central Government bears 10% of it, while L&T bears the remaining 90% of the cost. However, construction work was supposed to commence on 3 March 2011. Since the project has already been delayed by a year, the interest component has accumulated to 1,825 crore. As a result, the final current cost (as of March 2012) of the project stands at 15, 957 crore.

METRO STATION AT UPPAL

The first metro rail station in the city will come up at Uppal. The Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) officials have finalised the location and launched the works to complete its construction by the end of 2013. Each station, 140 m by 20 m in size and designed to accommodate six-coach trains, would cost around Rs 40 crore. In the first phase, there will be eight metro stations between Nagole and Mettuguda, and in all, 66 stations along the 72-kilometre metro rail project in three corridors. There will be three joint stations at Ameerpet (corridors I & III), Parade Grounds (corridors II & III) and at MGBS (corridors I & II). Unlike Delhi and Bengaluru metros, the HMR stations will be completely eco-friendly. They will have natural ventilation and no air-conditioning, and will use solar power. The other unique feature will be that stations will be of “spine and wing format” resembling a bird and 70 per cent of it will be pre-fabricated. This is to avoid inconvenience to road traffic during the construction period. The stations are being designed in four categories, 30 m (100 feet), 36 m (120 feet), 45 m (150 feet) and 60 m (200 feet) to avoid additional land acquisition for their construction. “The metro rail stations will be built as ‘cantilever stations’, perched on only one pillar at the centre, with no side pillars, unlike in Delhi and Bengaluru metros. It’s the first time in the country that cantilever elevated stations are being built, a rare engineering feat by L&T’s structural engineers. The stations will give the look of a global city to Hyderabad,” said N.V.S. Reddy, managing director, HMR. The stations will be divided into two levels, “concourse” and “platform”. Passengers’ entry and exit facilities with staircases, escalators and lifts will begin at concourse level which will be at a height of 8 m (26 feet).

METRO LINE TO BYPASS SECUNDERABAD RAILWAY STATION

Metro rail line to bypass Secunderabad railway station, The Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) viaduct line will not only be avoiding the Secunderabad railway station’s skyline but will also be built far higher than originally envisaged when crossing the railway tracks. Metro line across the three corridors will have eight railway track crossings of which four are near the railway station — Alugaddabhavi, Chilkalguda, Oliphant Bridge and Bhoiguda. Other railway crossings are at Bharatnagar, Lakdikapul, Malakpet and Begumpet. With the railway station slated for a major revamp, the metro rail authorities have been forced to take a slight detour of corridor two line - Jubilee Bus Station to Falaknuma. Instead of flying directly on the station, the line will now take a curve into the old Gandhi Hospital land and will be built over the Bhoiguda road under bridge. “The railway authorities wanted us to avoid taking the viaduct over the station because of the expansion plans where provision for double-decker trains movement is being made. Since the underground option is ruled out, we have jointly discussed various options before deciding to take the line across the Bhoiguda side through the old Gandhi hospital land,” explains HMR MD N.V.S. Reddy. The distance will increase by 300 metres but in the overall scheme of things during the construction stage, there are bound to be small changes, he insists. Another metro line of Corridor three — Nagole to Raidurg, will be crossing the Oliphant Bridge and will be about a kilometre away from Corridor Two line. Overhead metro stations will be coming up on the old hospital land (Corridor Two) and near Hotel Ramakrishna (Corridor Three). Metro line viaducts will be built at a height of eight metres to 22 metres when crossing railway tracks as the elevated stations will have concourse at 5.5 metres height and platforms at 11-12 metres height, he says.

SKY WALK

HMR and GHMC also have a grand plan of jointly constructing a skywalk connecting both the lines and also to the Secunderabad railway station at an estimated cost of Rs. 7.2 crore to reduce congestion on the station road. It also has eight bus stops from Rathifile till Secunderabad Gurudwara. “We also plan to have four skywalks in between connecting to the platforms and bus stops between the main entrance and the Rathifile bus stop,” he says. The skywalk is to be built on the central median with cantilever support on both sides of the road. It will be of 450 metres length and four metres wide with the secondary skywalks being 2.5 metres wide with staircases and escalators.

LINE THREE EXTENDED TO RAIDURG (STATION BETWEEN MIND SPACE CIRCLE AND BIODIVERSITY PARK)

Hyderabad Metro Rail’s Line Three from Nagole to Shilparamam will now terminate one kilometre away at Raidurg with the Government issuing orders allotting 15 acres for developing parking and circulation area for the station on Tuesday. The land was under the possession of A.P. Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) and has been handed over to the metro rail authorities for Rs.9 crore towards development charges excluding the land cost. It will be part of the 269 acres to be provided for the project and apart from land for depots at Miyapur, Nagole and Falaknuma, 57 acres are for parking and circulation at the overhead stations. With Raidurg land allotment, another 12 acres remain to be given. The terminal station at Shilparamam was aborted since the site was found to be on a lake bed. The elevated train will now take a left turn near Hi-Tec City and culminate near the Mindspace-Raheja edifice at Raidurg, explained HMR Managing Director N.V.S. Reddy. The new station should come as a boon to the estimated 2 lakh-odd people working in the hub including those working in the adjacent financial district. It would also mean avoiding seeking any land for parking and circulating areas for the stations from institutions like Osmania University, National Institute of Nutrition, Koti Women’s College and others. The extra kilometre for Line Three will escalate the Rs.14,132 crore project cost by Rs.200 crore. The third corridor will now be 28.52 km/24 stations. Line One is from Miyapur-L.B.Nagar – 28.87 km/27 stations and Line Two proposed from Jubilee Bus Station-Falaknuma is 14.78 km/16 stations and overall, the metro rail covers 72.16 km.

OTHER NEWS

The Hyderabad Metro Rail project will be dedicated to the nation in December next year 2013, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy said on Sunday 25nov2012. Inaugurating the work to set up launching girders on to the Metro rail pillars, Mr Reddy said the trials of the first phase of the Rs.16,375 crore project would begin in June 2014. He formally started the hydraulic cranes for launching girders on the Metro pillars for the 72-km elevated rail project.Later, addressing a public meeting at Uppal to mark the completion of two years in office, he said the prestigious Metro system on three high density corridors would carry 15 lakh people every day. He said the government was making all efforts to complete the project on schedule. “Even if there is a delay of one day on the part of the government, we will have to pay a penalty of Rs.32 lakh and if the L&T delays commissioning of the project by one day, they will have to pay Rs.64 lakh,” he said. Mr Reddy said the Metro project was a part of his government’s efforts to make Hyderabad a world-class city. He also unveiled a plaque, signalling the launch of the project.Though the works started a few months ago and pillars on a stretch of five km were already erected, no formal stone-laying function was organised. It is described as the world’s largest metro project under the public-private partnership. Vivek B. Gadgil, chief executive and managing director of L&T Metro Rail, said earlier this month that the entire project with 66 elevated Metro stations will be operational by July 2017. He said the trials would begin by the end of 2014 with the commissioning of the first stage of the project expected in 2015. The works entered a crucial phase on Sunday with the launching works on girders. N.V.S. Reddy, managing director of Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited, said the box type iron launching girder of about 34 metres and weighing 300 tonnes will be lifted using two hydraulic cranes of up to 150 tonnes each and erected on top of the two pillars. The works will be undertaken during night. He said the entire stretch of metro rail via duct would be implemented in precast segmental construction method to minimise the inconvenience to road users.

L&TMRH plans to run the maiden service between Nagole and Mettuguda

The first metro rail service is most likely to be commissioned by mid-2015 for the eight-kilometre stretch between Nagole and Mettuguda, a part of Line Three between Nagole and Raidurg. Although the planned timeline is December 2014, the concessionaire L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad (L&TMRH) wants to be absolutely sure of all aspects in terms of safety before allowing passengers to embark. “A lot of time will be required for testing and trial runs,” said Managing Director & Chief Executive V.B. Gadgil in a recent interaction with the media. Though the line will be ready by next year-end, it will be commissioned a few months later. But in the meantime, contracts for automatic fare collection, elevators and escalators for stations entries and exits as well as equipment for workshops are to be firmed up.

WORK ON SCHEDULE: “The project is on schedule and all out efforts are being made to complete all the 72-km routes by 2017. Geo-technical investigations are also going on at a very fast pace,” he declared. While the current pace was okay, he made it clear that the works accelerator has to be pressed and the output increased if the “tight timelines” have to be met. The firm has been handed over about 239 acres of the 269 and studies were initiated to ascertain the kind of real estate development various regions of the city can “absorb”. The CEO said properties will be developed in phases following the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) mode. Real estate development will be in the form of retail space, malls and multiplexes. “The city is growing radically and has a good potential. We have done conceptual designs for three to four land sites. We have taken environmental clearances and will be soon applying for municipal clearances,” he explained. Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) Managing Director N.V.S. Reddy hastened to add that the first priority was to build infrastructure for running the elevated metro while the real estate component was only a means to cross-subsidise the project. He also clarified that no religious structure or heritage monument was getting affected for the project. A few of them were either being ‘bypassed’ or shifted with mutual consent wherever road-widening was being taken up to facilitate easy traffic flow during the construction stage. Mr. Reddy also vowed that the works will begin at Sultan Bazar only after accommodating the affected parties.

Famous quotes containing the word cost:

I knew that the wall was the main thing in Quebec, and had cost a great deal of money.... In fact, these are the only remarkable walls we have in North America, though we have a good deal of Virginia fence, it is true.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The President has paid dear for his White House. It has commonly cost him all his peace, and the best of his manly attributes. To preserve for a short time so conspicuous an appearance before the world, he is content to eat dust before the real masters who stand erect behind the throne.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

I favor the policy of economy, not because I wish to save money, but because I wish to save people. The men and women of this country who toil are the ones who bear the cost of the Government. Every dollar that we carelessly waste means that their life will be so much the more meager. Every dollar that we prudently save means that their life will be so much the more abundant. Economy is idealism in its most practical terms.
    Calvin Coolidge (1872–1933)
