Howard Clifton Brown

Howard Clifton Brown (3 April 1868 – 11 September 1946) was a British Conservative Party politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Newbury.

The son of James Clifton Brown of Amelia Rowe, he was elected to the House of Commons for Newbury at an unopposed by-election on 6 June 1922. However, in the following year's general election he lost the seat by just 41 votes to his Liberal opponent, Innes Harold Stranger.

At the 1924 general election he was re-elected as Newbury's MP, which he remained until stepping down at the 1945 general election.

Famous quotes containing the words howard, clifton and/or brown:

It is not impossible, of course, after such an administration as Roosevelt’s and after the change in method that I could not but adapt in view of my different way of looking at things, that questions should arise as to whether I should go back on the principles of the Roosevelt administration.... I have a government of limited power under a Constitution, and we have got to work out our problems on the basis of law. Now, if that is reactionary, then I am a reactionary.
    —William Howard Taft (1857–1930)

Poetry is a matter of life, not just a matter of language.
    —Lucille Clifton (b. 1936)

I’m the only woman reporter they have, so I get all the meat boycott stories and all the meatless food stories.... Actually, I’ve only cooked three meals in my life. The most uncomfortable place for me in the whole world is in a kitchen.
    —Theresa Brown (b. 1957)
