Hooke Library

The Hooke Library was the main teaching science lending library at the University of Oxford, England for undergraduates. During August 2007, the Hooke Library was incorporated into Radcliffe Science Library, which became a lending library from 1 October 2007.

The library was officially part of the Bodleian Library, and was also associated with the nearby Radcliffe Science Library, a reference library used more for research. It was located on South Parks Road in the Science Area of the University. The library was named after Robert Hooke, a major scientist who worked in Oxford.

The Hooke Library housed its collection in the Abbot's Kitchen which was originally part of the Oxford University Museum and on the staircase at the eastern end of the Jackson Wing of the Radcliffe Science Library.

The area which housed the Hooke Library collection is now part of the Radcliffe Science Library with the Abbot's Kitchen having been transformed into a refreshment area and a training room.

Famous quotes containing the words hooke and/or library:

The truth is, the Science of Nature has been already too long made only a work of the brain and the fancy: It is now high time that it should return to the plainness and soundness of observations on material and obvious things.
    —Robert Hooke (1635–1703)

To a historian libraries are food, shelter, and even muse. They are of two kinds: the library of published material, books, pamphlets, periodicals, and the archive of unpublished papers and documents.
    Barbara Tuchman (1912–1989)
