Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China

The Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements in China (the Alliance) is a pro-democratic organization that was established on 21 May 1989 in the then British colony of Hong Kong during the demonstration for the students protest in Tiananmen Square in Beijing. The aims of the organization are supporting patriotic democratic movements in China, putting an end to the current one-party dictatorship established by the Communist Party of China, and building a democratic China. It has become the largest grassroots pro-democracy advocacy group in Hong Kong, comprising over 200 base-level members from labour, councillor offices, religious, students, women and political commentary interest groups. Every year, the Alliance holds "Vindicate 4 June and Relay the Torch" activity in Victoria Park. According to the organizers, the 20th anniversary commemorations in Victoria Park, Hong Kong, held on 4 June 2009 was attended by over 150,000 people.

Famous quotes containing the words alliance, support, patriotic, democratic, movements and/or china:

But wise men pierce this rotten diction and fasten words again to visible things; so that picturesque language is at once a commanding certificate that he who employs it, is a man in alliance with truth and God.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

‘Tis not enough to help the feeble up,
    But to support him after.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

No doubt Jews are most obnoxious creatures. Any competent historian or psychoanalyst can bring a mass of incontrovertible evidence to prove that it would have been better for the world if the Jews had never existed. But I, as an Irishman, can, with patriotic relish, demonstrate the same of the English. Also of the Irish.... We all live in glass houses. Is it wise to throw stones at the Jews? Is it wise to throw stones at all?
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

There’s no such thing as socialism pure
Except as an abstraction of the mind.
    There’s only democratic socialism,
    Monarchic socialism, oligarchic
The last being what they seem to have in Russia.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

In the works of man, everything is as poor as its author; vision is confined, means are limited, scope is restricted, movements are labored, and results are humdrum.
    Joseph De Maistre (1753–1821)

    The roof of England fell
    Great Paris tolled her bell
And China staunched her milk and wept for bread
    Karl Shapiro (b. 1913)
