Holy Child Academy - Brief History

Brief History

The academy traces its roots from the efforts of missionary Fr. Jose Ma. Reyes of the Society of Jesus to establish a secondary school in 1940 for the natives of the City. HCA was then known by the name Pagadian Academy and was the sole Catholic school in the City (and in the entire Province of Zamboanga del Sur during the period). The academy was, to a certain long period of time, under the control of the Missionary Society of St. Columban (MSSC).

In the 1960s, when the MSSC waived full autonomy over its schools in the Province of Zamboanga del Sur, Holy Child Academy with the Star of the Sea High School in the Municipality of Tukuran, Immaculate Heart Academy in the Municipality of Dumalinao, and Saint Columban College (also, in Pagadian City) were turned over to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pagadian. The four(4) schools were formed to compose what is known today as the Diocesan Schools Group of Pagadian.

In the 1980s, the academy was renamed to its present name-Holy Child Academy in honor of the Patron Saint of Pagadian City, the "Holy Child" or "Child Jesus"; also locally known as "Sr. Sto. NiƱo".
