Famous quotes containing the words french, napoleon and/or bonaparte:

Sanity is the lot of those who are most obtuse, for lucidity destroys one’s equilibrium: it is unhealthy to honestly endure the labors of the mind which incessantly contradict what they have just established.
    Georges, French novelist, critic. L’AbbĂ© C, pt. 2, ch. 17 (1950)

Who are we? And for what are we going to fight? Are we the titled slaves of George the Third? The military conscripts of Napoleon the Great? Or the frozen peasants of the Russian Czar? No—we are the free born sons of America; the citizens of the only republic now existing in the world; and the only people on earth who possess rights, liberties, and property which they dare call their own.
    Andrew Jackson (1767–1845)

Very ingenious, Captain. You make me suspect your Cochise has studied under Alexander the Great, or Bonaparte at the least.
    Frank S. Nugent (1908–1965)
