High Sheriff of Caernarvonshire

High Sheriff Of Caernarvonshire

This is a list of High Sheriffs of Caernarvonshire.

The High Sheriff is the oldest secular office under the Crown. Formerly the High Sheriff was the principal law enforcement officer in the county but over the centuries most of the responsibilities associated with the post have been transferred elsewhere or are now defunct, so that its functions are now largely ceremonial. The High Sheriff changes every March. The shrievalty of Caernarvonshireshire, together with that of Anglesey and Merionethshire, was abolished in 1974 when the county and shrievalty of Gwynedd was created.

Famous quotes containing the words high and/or sheriff:

I remember once dreaming of pushing a canoe up the rivers of Maine, and that, when I had got so high that the channels were dry, I kept on through the ravines and gorges, nearly as well as before, by pushing a little harder, and now it seemed to me that my dream was partially realized.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The man’s an M.D., like you. He’s entitled to his opinion. Or do you want me to charge him with confusing a country doctor?
—Robert M. Fresco. Jack Arnold. Sheriff Jack Andrews (Nestor Paiva)
