High Priests in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

In the LDS Church, high priests are primarily responsible for the spiritual welfare of the members and the administration of local church units called wards and stakes.

Like other priesthood offices in the LDS Church, high priests are organized into quorums. The High Priests Quorum, however, is organized at the stake level, with the president of the quorum being the stake president. In contrast, priesthood quorums for the offices of deacon, teacher, priest, and elder are organized at the ward level. In consultation with the bishop, the stake president organizes a high priests "group" in each ward. Each group is provided with a group leader who typically selects two assistants and a secretary to assist him. Assignments made to the group include home teaching and assisting adult males who are not yet elders prepare to receive the Melchizedek priesthood. High priests are also responsible for temple and family history work within a ward. Members assigned to be home taught by the Bishop of a ward or the President of a Branch are generally more apt to be widows, widowers, single sisters, and other part member families.

In a district, there is no high priests quorum. Men holding the office of high priest join the elders quorum of the branch that they live in.

There are a number of positions in the LDS Church which may only be filled by a high priest. Among these are stake president and his counselors, member of a stake high council, and mission president. A bishop must be a high priest unless he can prove a right-by-lineage to the calling (see D&C 107:69). Bishops' counselors are usually high priests, but this is not required and counselors in a student ward are not ordinarily ordained high priests to fill this position. A branch president and his counselors need not be high priests. Any high priest is eligible to be called as a member of the First Presidency, but in recent practice most members of the First Presidency have been apostles.

Famous quotes containing the words high, priests, church, jesus, christ and/or saints:

If there be no nobility of descent in a nation, all the more indispensable is it that there should be nobility of ascent—a character in them that bear rule, so fine and high and pure, that as men come within the circle of its influence, they involuntarily pay homage to that which is the one pre-eminent distinction, the Royalty of Virtue.
    Henry Codman Potter (1835–1908)

    Along the avenue of cypresses,
All in their scarlet cloaks and surplices
Of linen, go the chanting choristers,
The priests in gold and black, the villagers. . . .
    —D.H. (David Herbert)

...I have come to make distinctions between what I call the academy and literature, the moral equivalents of church and God. The academy may lie, but literature tries to tell the truth.
    Dorothy Allison (b. 1949)

We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; yet we know that a person is justified not by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ. And we have come to believe in Christ Jesus, so that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by doing the works of the law, because no one will be justified by the works of the law.
    Bible: New Testament, Galatians 2:15-16.

The Marxist analysis has got nothing to do with what happened in Stalin’s Russia: it’s like blaming Jesus Christ for the Inquisition in Spain.
    Tony Benn (b. 1925)

Its imaginary value will increase with the years, and if he [his grandson-in-law] lives to my age, or another half century, he may see it carried in the procession of our nation’s birthday, as the relics of the saints are in those of the church.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)
