Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium - Rides and Transportation - Railroad

Railroad

The Omaha Zoo Railroad is a 2.5-mile (4.0 km) narrow gauge train that loops through the zoo. The railroad began operations on July 22, 1968 after the track was laid down by the Union Pacific railroad. The train operates with one of two oil-powered steam locomotives. Riva is the newest locomotive owned by the zoo despite being manufactured first. It is approximately twice as powerful as the #119 and is regularly used on weekends when more visitors are present. The #119 is the original locomotive for the zoo. A new locomotive named "Virgie" arrived in September 2008. This diesel is styled with a face resembling "Virgie" It will supplement the steam locomotives beginning in 2009- see photo in image gallery section.

Famous quotes containing the word railroad:

People that make puns are like wanton boys that put coppers on the railroad tracks. They amuse themselves and other children but their little trick may upset a freight train of conversation for the sake of a battered witticism.
    Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. (1809–1894)

This I saw when waking late,
Going by at a railroad rate,
Looking through wreaths of engine smoke
Far into the lives of other folk.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)

The worst enemy of good government is not our ignorant foreign voter, but our educated domestic railroad president, our prominent business man, our leading lawyer.
    John Jay Chapman (1862–1933)
