Famous quotes containing the words heinrich heine, heine, prize, ministry and/or culture:

    The foolish race of mankind
    Are swarming below in the night;
    They shriek and rage and quarrel—
    And all of them are right.
    Heinrich Heine (1797–1856)

    Whatever tears one may shed, in the end one always blows one’s nose.
    —Heinrich Heine (1797–1856)

    Then, though I prize my friends, I cannot afford to talk with them and study their visions, lest I lose my own. It would indeed give me a certain household joy to quit this lofty seeking, this spiritual astronomy, or search of stars, and come down to warm sympathies with you; but then I know well I shall mourn always the vanishing of my mighty gods.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

    The State has but one face for me: that of the police. To my eyes, all of the State’s ministries have this single face, and I cannot imagine the ministry of culture other than as the police of culture, with its prefect and commissioners.
    Jean Dubuffet (1901–1985)

    Like every other good thing in this world, leisure and culture have to be paid for. Fortunately, however, it is not the leisured and the cultured who have to pay.
    Aldous Huxley (1894–1963)
