Social Conditions

Main article: Social conditions in Honduras

Over the centuries, the territory of Honduras has known a number of social systems, ranging from ancient forager groups through early complex societies to more elaborated ones, such as those of the Maya and Lenca. Spanish conquest built on these, and their traditions carried over into the post independence period. Honduras' emergence in the late nineteenth century as a cash crop producing exporter and then its limited industrialization through the maquiladora system have brought about the conditions of today.

In 2010, 2011 and 2012, Honduras was ranked as having the highest rate of intentional homicide in the world.

Famous quotes containing the words social and/or conditions:

Throughout the 1980’s, we did hear too much about individual gain and the ethos of selfishness and greed. We did not hear enough about how to be a good member of a community, to define the common good and to repair the social contract. And we also found that while prosperity does not trickle down from the most powerful to the rest of us, all too often indifference and even intolerance do.
    Hillary Rodham Clinton (b. 1947)

The worst of my actions or conditions seem not so ugly unto me as I find it both ugly and base not to dare to avouch for them.
    Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592)
