History

The Harbour Line was officially opened on 12 December 1910, from Kurla to Reay Road. In 1925, the elevated stretch between Dockyard Road and Sandhurst Road was opened providing connectivity to Victoria Terminus (now CST). The Harbour Line in Navi Mumbai was commissioned in 1992 with the commissioning of Mankhurd-Vashi railway line and was extended up to Belapur in 1993, and thereafter up to Panvel in 1998.

In January 2012, the cabinet subcommittee on infrastructure cleared the proposal to convert all 9-car trains into 12-car ones on the Harbour Line. This will increase the passenger-carrying capacity by 33%. According to estimates, passenger growth on the Harbour Line stood at 10% per annum. Apart from increasing the length of the platforms, the railway will also have to make changes in the location of signals, besides altering the overhead equipment. Total work on this project, including augmentation of the existing 9-car fleet to 12 cars, is estimated to cost 800 crore.

The length of the rail line between CST and Panvel is 50km.
