Hands On A Hard Body: The Documentary - Stage Musical

Stage Musical

The documentary was made into a musical commissioned by La Jolla Playhouse. The book is by Doug Wright, music by Amanda Green and Trey Anastasio, lyrics by Amanda Green, choreography by Benjamin Millepied, and direction by Neil Pepe. The first reading took place around one week before Anastasio's November 18, 2010 show at Princeton University's Richardson Auditorium. The musical had its world premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse, running from April 2012 through June 2012. The New York Times reviewer wrote that the musical "...sings sincerely and with a rough-edged humor of the dusty margins of American life.... features a wry, economical book by the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Doug Wright..., along with a soulful score by Amanda Green and Trey Anastasio..." The musical is expected to play on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theater in the 2012-13 season. The entire original cast will be reprising their roles. Previews begin February 23, 2013. Opening is set for March 21, 2013.

Famous quotes containing the words stage and/or musical:

    But the effort, the effort! And as the marrow is eaten out of a man’s bones and the soul out of his belly, contending with the strange rapacity of savage life, the lower stage of creation, he cannot make the effort any more.
    —D.H. (David Herbert)

    Through man, and woman, and sea, and star,
    Saw the dance of nature forward far;
    Through worlds, and races, and terms, and times,
    Saw musical order, and pairing rhymes.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
