Gunderson High School - Boy's Basketball Team Walk-Out

Boy's Basketball Team Walk-Out

After a nine-point loss to Los Gatos High School on December 16, 2011, in a post-game talk, Coach Mike Allen addressed his "need to rebuild" the boy's basketball team. The next morning the top five players were kicked off the team with Allen citing reasons such as their lack of respect, playful attitudes, and tardiness, to the Mercury News, but at the time of the expulsion no explanation was given to the players. The day afterward, thirteen varsity players approached Coach Allen "wanting to talk," but as their intentions proved unsuccessful, the thirteen players left the basketball team together. The players condemn the coach's rash decision, hypocrisy, and claimed that some of the events from the walkout were fabricated when the coach was interviewed. Allen stated that he "loves to death, but some things need to change." The walkout had caused many losses for the boy's basketball team that season along with continual news coverage from KRON 4.

Famous quotes containing the words boy, basketball and/or team:

When you gonna get married, Marty? You should be ashamed of yourself. All your brothers and sisters, younger than you, they get married and got the children. I meet your mother in the produce store. She say to me “Eh, you know a nice girl for my boy Marty?” What’s the matter with you? That’s no way!
    Paddy Chayefsky (1923–1981)

Perhaps basketball and poetry have just a few things in common, but the most important is the possibility of transcendence. The opposite is labor. In writing, every writer knows when he or she is laboring to achieve an effect. You want to get from here to there, but find yourself willing it, forcing it. The equivalent in basketball is aiming your shot, a kind of strained and usually ineffective purposefulness. What you want is to be in some kind of flow, each next moment a discovery.
    Stephen Dunn (b. 1939)

Once a word is spoken, a team of four horse cannot retake it.
    Chinese proverb.
