Types of Grips
Most competitive gymnasts wear dowel grips. On the high bar, men use grips that have three finger holes and a small dowel, whereas grips used on the still rings have a larger dowel and two finger holes. Grips used on the parallel bars have two finger holes and a small dowel. Women's grips have two finger holes and resemble men's ring grips.
Gymnasts at lower competition levels and those participating in recreational gymnastics typically use grips that lack dowel rods. Such grips provide no mechanical advantage for gripping the bar; they are used primarily to minimize friction injuries. Also, these grips are usually less expensive and are made of thinner leather.

Famous quotes containing the words types of, types and/or grips:
“Our children evaluate themselves based on the opinions we have of them. When we use harsh words, biting comments, and a sarcastic tone of voice, we plant the seeds of self-doubt in their developing minds.... Children who receive a steady diet of these types of messages end up feeling powerless, inadequate, and unimportant. They start to believe that they are bad, and that they can never do enough.”
—Stephanie Martson (20th century)
“Our major universities are now stuck with an army of pedestrian, toadying careerists, Fifties types who wave around Sixties banners to conceal their record of ruthless, beaverlike tunneling to the top.”
—Camille Paglia (b. 1947)
“Reality is a prison, where ... one vegetates and always will. All the restthought, actionis just a pastime, mental or physical. What counts then, is to come to grips with reality. The rest can go.”
—Cesare Pavese (19081950)
