Great White Fleet - Experience Gained

Experience Gained

The cruise of the Great White Fleet provided practical experience for US naval personnel in sea duty and ship handling. It also showed the viability of US warships for long-range operations as no major mechanical mishaps occurred. However, while the cruise uncovered design flaws, it did not test the abilities to engage in battle fleet action. In fact, the success of the deployment might have helped obscure design deficiencies that were not addressed until World War I. These included excessive draft, low armor belts, large turret openings and exposed ammunition hoists.

Famous quotes containing the words experience and/or gained:

All you’ve got is the word of a fool dog. It’s been my experience that a bloodhound is the foolishest dog that is. I don’t remember of anybody ever keeping a bloodhound for a yard dog. They’re such dad blasted fools.
    Laurence Stallings (1894–1968)

Who can measure the advantages that would result if the magnificent abilities of these women could be devoted to the needs of government, society and home, instead of being consumed in the struggle to obtain their birthright of individual freedom? Until this be gained we can never know, we can not even prophesy the capacity and power of women for the uplifting of humanity.
    Susan B. Anthony (1820–1906)
