Grant's Tomb - in Popular Culture

In Popular Culture

Comedian Groucho Marx often asked contestants on his television show, You Bet Your Life, who was buried in Grant's Tomb. The correct answer is "no one," since Grant and his wife are entombed, rather than buried. However, Marx often still accepted the answer "Grant," and awarded a consolation prize to those who gave it. He used the question to ensure that everyone won a prize on the show.

Famous quotes containing the words popular and/or culture:

I do not see why, since America and her autumn woods have been discovered, our leaves should not compete with the precious stones in giving names to colors; and, indeed, I believe that in course of time the names of some of our trees and shrubs, as well as flowers, will get into our popular chromatic nomenclature.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Anthropologists have found that around the world whatever is considered “men’s work” is almost universally given higher status than “women’s work.” If in one culture it is men who build houses and women who make baskets, then that culture will see house-building as more important. In another culture, perhaps right next door, the reverse may be true, and basket- weaving will have higher social status than house-building.
