Grand River Sachem

The Grand River Sachem is the oldest newspaper in Haldimand and Norfolk counties, Ontario. It was started in 1853 as the Cayuga Sachem by Thomas Messenger.

Messenger sold the Sachem and moved his press to Caledonia, Ontario in 1856. He started a new publication called The Caledonia Advertiser. Later that year, the Cayuga Sachem moved to Dunnville, Ontario and changed its name, so Messenger renamed his Caledonia publication to the Grand River Sachem. In 1865 after a devastating fire, the Sachem moved to a new building where it is still published today. The Sachem was a paid-circulation weekly for many years, switching to free distribuiion in 2004 after its purchase by Metroland Media Group from owner/publisher Neil Dring.

In 2010, The Sachem was awarded Haldimand County's Business Achievement Award for Excellence by the local municipality. In 2011, The Sachem launched a weekly real estate newspaper called the Real Estate Exchange which features area homes for sale listings. In 2012, after the demise of the Sun Media owned Dunnville Chronicle, the Sachem launched a new zoned edition just in Dunnville called Dunnville Sachem EXTRA which is delivered along with the regular newspaper in Dunnville providing Dunnville residents with additional local community news.

Famous quotes containing the words grand and/or river:

We found nothing grand in the history of the Jews nor in the morals inculcated in the Pentateuch.... I know of no other books that so fully teach the subjection and degradation of woman.
    Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815–1902)

The murmurs of many a famous river on the other side of the globe reach even to us here, as to more distant dwellers on its banks; many a poet’s stream, floating the helms and shields of heroes on its bosom.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
