Connection To Main Island
Currently the island can be reached by ferry boat. Passenger and car ferries cross on a regular basis between the port of Mġarr on Gozo and Ċirkewwa in the island of Malta. This service is used for goods, tourism and commuting (Gozitan students study at the University of Malta). As a concession residents of Gozo are able to use the ferry at a subsidised rate, significantly lower than the standard fare. The sea plane operates from Valletta to Mgarr harbour. There was previously a helicopter service which connected the two, but this ceased in 2006.
The connection between the two islands is heavily used. Around 1.1 million cars travel on the current transport links per year, and many more foot passengers.
Several proposals have been made to construct a road link between Malta and Gozo. In 1972 the newly elected Socialist Administration carried out a feasibility study which concluded that the building of a bridge between the two islands was possible but would have negative environmental effects. A tunnel was also considered but found to be too expensive at the time. An online poll by The Times of Malta in 2006 found that 55% of respondents supported a road link.
An airstrip on Gozo was proposed in the 1990s, but rejected for environmental reasons.

Famous quotes containing the words connection to, connection, main and/or island:
“It may comfort you to know that if your child reaches the age of eleven or twelve and you have a good bond or relationship, no matter how dramatic adolescence becomes, you children will probably turn out all right and want some form of connection to you in adulthood.”
—Charlotte Davis Kasl (20th century)
“The virtue of art lies in detachment, in sequestering one object from the embarrassing variety. Until one thing comes out from the connection of things, there can be enjoyment, contemplation, but no thought.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“The Temptress has now been shown hereterrible. The story, Garbo, everything is extremely bad. It is no exaggeration to say that I was dreadful. I was tired, I couldnt sleep and everything went wrong. But the main reason is, I suppose, that Im no actress.”
—Greta Garbo (19051990)
“We crossed a deep and wide bay which makes eastward north of Kineo, leaving an island on our left, and keeping to the eastern side of the lake. This way or that led to some Tomhegan or Socatarian stream, up which the Indian had hunted, and whither I longed to go. The last name, however, had a bogus sound, too much like sectarian for me, as if a missionary had tampered with it; but I knew that the Indians were very liberal. I think I should have inclined to the Tomhegan first.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
