Goodman & Company - Firm History

Firm History

Goodman & Company, LLP (Goodman) was first founded in 1932 by M. Lu Goodman. Working alongside D. Vernon Norman, the firm was originally known as Goodman, Norman & Company.

By the late sixties, Goodman had merged with the firm Berger & Wilson, and was officially renamed “Goodman & Company” to honor the then retired founding partner.

In 1978, Goodman merged with Bowman, Upton & Murphy and expanded its practice into Virginia Beach and Richmond, Virginia.

Recognizing that the Richmond market had a great deal of potential for a medium sized full service accounting firm, efforts were started to expand the practice to offer a broader range of services. This culminated in the merger with Levin and Rochkind in 1979.

Just after the 50th anniversary of Goodman & Company, the firm was recognized by the Tidewater Virginian as having “evolved into the largest independent accounting firm in the state”.

By the mid 1980s, Aaron Rosen & Company merged with Goodman & Company, making Joan Aaron the first female partner of Goodman and expanding their presence into Newport News, Virginia.

From the late 1980s well into the new millennium, Goodman & Company continued to merge with several companies including:

  • Womack and Burke
  • Erny & Mason
  • Collins-Gregg Associates
  • LaLonde, Wooding & Young
  • Harry Schwarz & Company
  • Aim Associates, Inc

  • Manning, Perkinson, Floyd & Company
  • Crutchley, Marginot, & Tosi
  • Kamerow, Weintraub & Swain, LLP

As of April 1, 2011, Goodman & Company merged with Dixon Hughes to form Dixon Hughes Goodman, LLP.

These mergers resulted in locations in eleven states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington.

Today, Dixon Hughes Goodman LLP has a combined history of 79 years and employs over 1,700 people.

Famous quotes containing the words firm and/or history:

What is a firm hand to me, of what use to me is this astonishing power if I cannot change the order of things, if I cannot make the sun set in the east, that suffering diminish and that beings no longer die?
    Albert Camus (1913–1960)

Tell me of the height of the mountains of the moon, or of the diameter of space, and I may believe you, but of the secret history of the Almighty, and I shall pronounce thee mad.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
