“My mother dandled me and sang,
How young it is, how young!
And made a golden cradle
That on a willow swung.
He went away, my mother sang,
When I was brought to bed....”

“Without [diversion] we would be in a state of weariness, and this weariness would spur us on to seek a more solid means of escaping from it. But diversion amuses us, and leads us unconsciously to death.”
