Golden Ale (UK) - Strong Pale Ale

Strong Pale Ale

Strong pale ales are ales made predominantly with pale malts and have an alcohol strength that may start around 5%, though typically starts a bit higher at 7 or 8% by volume and may go up to 12%, though brewers have been pushing the alcohol strength higher. In 1994 the Hair of the Dog Brewing Company produced a Strong Pale Ale with an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 29%. Brewdog recently released "Sink the Bismark", a 41% ABV pale ale, which is stronger than typical distilled spirits of 40% ABV. Orval typifies the Belgian pale ale style, and is fermented with some Brettanomyces in addition to Saccharomyces yeast.

Famous quotes containing the words strong, pale and/or ale:

The aphorism sometimes casts off cynicism and expresses strong feeling.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)

    With fairest flowers
Whilst summer lasts and I live here, Fidele,
I’ll sweeten thy sad grave. Thou shalt not lack
The flower that’s like thy face, pale primrose, nor
The azured harebell, like thy veins; no, nor
The leaf of eglantine, whom not to slander,
    Outsweetened not thy breath.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

Bring us in no browne bred, for that is made of brane,
Nor bring us in no white bred, for therein is no gane,
But bring us in good ale!

Bring us in no befe, for there is many bones,
But bring us in good ale, for that goth downe at ones,
And bring us in good ale!
—Unknown. Bring Us In Good Ale (l. 3–8)
