The film was made at a budget of Rs. 4 crores and did collections of Rs. 44 crores and was declared a hit. Originally Kamal Haasan was signed to play the lead role and the advertisement appeared in Screen read as Welcome back to Hindi Screen, but Kamal withdrew from the film for unknown reasons.
