Tennis Career
Bastl was an All-American at the University of Southern California.
The biggest win of Bastl's tennis career came in the second round of 2002 Wimbledon, where he caused one of the biggest upsets in Wimbledon history by defeating seven-time Wimbledon champion, Pete Sampras, winning in five sets by the score of 6–3, 6–2, 4–6, 3–6, 6–4. Bastl had only been in the main draw of 2002 Wimbledon as a lucky loser, having previously lost to Alexander Waske in three straight sets in the final qualifying round at Roehampton.
On May 1, 2000, Bastl was ranked No. 71 in the world in the ATP Rankings, which is his highest career ranking to date. As of August 22, 2011, he was ranked at number 845 in the ATP World Rankings. He was the first player to be beaten by Andy Murray in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament, at 2005 Wimbledon, with Murray winning 6–4, 6–2, 6–2.
Bastl and Chris Guccione beat Andy Ram and Jonathan Erlich in doubles 7–5, 7–6 to win the final of the Israel Ramat Hasharon Challenger tournament in May 2009.
