Hitler Youth and Danish Resistance
At the age of 12, Schafer was pressured into joining the Hitler Youth. In 1943 he was stationed in Denmark with the occupation forces. In Denmark, he risked his life to work with the Danish resistance under the leadership of Damgaard Hansen. He was betrayed, captured by the Gestapo, found guilty of espionage, and sentenced to death. He was jailed for six months while awaiting execution. Twice, he was placed in front of firing squads in an effort to coerce him into betraying members of the resistance. He refused to name names and, at 17, started a hunger strike.
On March 16, 1945, Heinrich Himmler commuted his death sentence to 15 years in prison. Shafer's father had been writing to the prison, begging for his son's release, though it is unclear what effect this had. When the Allied Forces liberated Berlin, Schafer had worked 18 months hard labor in Grabow, Mecklenburg, Germany.

Famous quotes containing the words hitler, youth and/or resistance:
“What the hell is nostalgia doing in a science-fiction film? With the whole universe and all the future to play in, Lucas took his marvelous toys and crawled under the fringed cloth on the parlor table, back into a nice safe hideyhole, along with Flash Gordon and the Cowardly Lion and Luck Skywalker and the Flying Aces and the Hitler Jugend. If theres a message there, I dont think I want to hear it.”
—Ursula K. Le Guin (b. 1929)
“Such, such were the joys
When we all, girls and boys,
In our youth time were seen
On the Echoing Green.”
—William Blake (17571827)
“The greatest, or rather the most prominent, part of this city was constructed with the design to offer the deadest resistance to leaden and iron missiles that might be cast against it. But it is a remarkable meteorological and psychological fact, that it is rarely known to rain lead with much violence, except on places so constructed.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
