Financial Problems & Controversy

Financial woes have forced Gayelle The Channel to move out of its St James studios and to downsize because of poor management and declining advertising revenue. Gayelle was forced to send home its entire news team on March 31, 2009, and paying severance to 16 displaced news staff. Gayelle TV then entered into an agreement with CNC3 Television to simulcast the CNC3 7pm newscast. According to Paulo Kernahan, former news presenter at Gayelle, "Gayelle had built up roughly four years of goodwill with advertisers but, when it became clear that the station had no intention of improving its product, eventually this interest began to dissipate."

On February 2010, Gayelle The Channel was instructed by state owned Caribbean New Media Group (CNMG) to cease and desist broadcasting the Parade of the Bands on Carnival Monday & Tuesday, as it was an infringement of CNMG’s purchased rights to be the sole transmitter of all Carnival events and street parades. A visibly irate Fabien voiced his opinion on the situation via a video, titled "Long Live Gayelle" on the social Web site Facebook. Accusing CNMG of “jumping on the bandwagon for Carnival,” Fabien, who described the situation as “sad,” said he did not have the resources to fight the station in court and had no choice but to stop the coverage. Fabien said that the channel “condemns in the strongest way that the streets of Trinidad and Tobago can be sold to any media entity during a national festival like Carnival.”

Famous quotes containing the words financial, problems and/or controversy:

What people don’t realize is that intimacy has its conventions as well as ordinary social intercourse. There are three cardinal rules—don’t take somebody else’s boyfriend unless you’ve been specifically invited to do so, don’t take a drink without being asked, and keep a scrupulous accounting in financial matters.
    —W.H. (Wystan Hugh)

I conceive that the leading characteristic of the nineteenth century has been the rapid growth of the scientific spirit, the consequent application of scientific methods of investigation to all the problems with which the human mind is occupied, and the correlative rejection of traditional beliefs which have proved their incompetence to bear such investigation.
    Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–95)

And therefore, as when there is a controversy in an account, the parties must by their own accord, set up for right Reason, the Reason of some Arbitrator, or Judge, to whose sentence, they will both stand, or their controversy must either come to blows, or be undecided, for want of a right Reason constituted by Nature; so is it also in all debates of what kind soever.
    Thomas Hobbes (1579–1688)
