Freight Railways in Melbourne - Dedicated Lines

Dedicated Lines

On the freight rail network there are a number of dedicated lines for freight traffic. These lines link the outer suburbs of Melbourne to the various freight terminals in the inner suburbs. The first of these lines was built in 1887, the last was built in 1929.

The only passenger traffic using these lines are V/Line Standard Gauge services to Albury, the less frequent CountryLink XPT to Sydney, and Great Southern Railway's The Overland, as well as V/Line services in times of disruptions to normal services. The interfaces between the freight and passenger networks are limited, meaning delays to one do not affect another.

Famous quotes containing the words dedicated and/or lines:

    Individually, museums are fine institutions, dedicated to the high values of preservation, education and truth; collectively, their growth in numbers points to the imaginative death of this country.
    Robert Hewison (b. 1943)

    When first my lines of heavenly joys made mention,
    Such was their luster, they did so excel,
    That I sought out quaint words and trim invention;
    My thoughts began to burnish, sprout, and swell,
    Curling with metaphors a plain intention,
    Decking the sense as if it were to sell.
    George Herbert (1593–1633)
