Franconian Languages
Franconian is a term collectively referring to a number of languages and dialects possibly derived from the languages and dialects originally spoken by the Franks. They include the Low Franconian languages, of which Dutch is the primary member, the West Central German dialects (also known as "Middle Franconian dialects"), and several transitional High German dialects spoken in Franconia. Linguists have different views about whether there really is a Franconian language group and whether these languages and dialects have really descended from a single proto-language like Istvaeonic or Old Frankish. Some of these dialects are considered to be Dutch dialects or to have Dutch origins; others German.
