Victorian Football Pyramid
The Victorian pyramid consists of two city wide leagues at the top, followed by leagues covering the North-West or South-East Region. This pyramid operates during the winter months with the best players participating in the summer league with clubs representing regions. This ensures that top flight football represents all participants equally and is a vehicle for identifying talent across the state.
For the 2013 season, FFV announced a restructure of the league. State League football will now exist at all levels below the Victorian Premier League. This will encompass the leagues formerly known as Provisional and Metropolitan leagues. The league structure will consist of State League One to Five, with leagues below State league Three being divided geographically into North, East, South and West. There have been no changes made from State League One to Three and the VPL.
2013 will see the inaugural State League Champions series take place in Victoria. The champion of each league from State League Two and below will play a finals series against the champions of other regions in their division as follows
- State League Two North West v South East
- State League Three North West v South East
- State League Four North v West & South v East, with winners meeting in a final
- State League Five North v West & South v East, with winners meeting in a final
Most clubs in Victoria owe their heritage to immigrant communities which continue to be the backbone of most clubs. To honour this legacy, small flags beside each club identify they historical tradition. Football Federation Victoria, announced that the new name of the Summer League will be the Victorian Champions League.
