Fluvanna High School - History of The Flying Flucos Nickname

History of The Flying Flucos Nickname

In the 1940s Fluvanna County was one of the few teams in Virginia that was playing high school football. The team was very successful. There was a big game with a school from the Richmond area. In a newspaper article the term Flying Flucos emerged. Something was written to the effect, "The High Flying Men of Flu.Co." (an attempt to abbreviate Fluvanna County) The students at Fluvanna County HS embraced 'Flying Flucos' and it has been the nickname ever since.

A first attempt to create a visual image of the mascot was the 'Mercury Winged Foot' Flying Fluco logo that appeared in the 1960s. Students at the old FCHS (now middle school) referred to the gym as the 'Shoebox', a moniker brought about by two FCHS students while anchoring the school's morning television show. The Old English script Flying 'F' with wings is a recent change. Over the years many efforts to make a super hero type character the Flying Fluco mascot were attempted but all never gathered much support. Recently a caped 'Flucoman' mascot has appeared. The Flying Fluco nickname made the ESPN Top High School nicknames in the country. http://www.halcyon.com/marcs/mascoths2.html

Famous quotes containing the words history of, history, flying and/or nickname:

Let us not underrate the value of a fact; it will one day flower in a truth. It is astonishing how few facts of importance are added in a century to the natural history of any animal. The natural history of man himself is still being gradually written.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

[Men say:] “Don’t you know that we are your natural protectors?” But what is a woman afraid of on a lonely road after dark? The bears and wolves are all gone; there is nothing to be afraid of now but our natural protectors.
Frances A. Griffin, U.S. suffragist. As quoted in History of Woman Suffrage, vol. 4, ch. 19, by Susan B. Anthony and Ida Husted Harper (1902)

Now I am alone with the dead,
    flying off bridges,
hurling myself like a beer can into the wastebasket.
I am flying like a single red rose,
    leaving a jet stream
    of solitude....
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)

A nickname is the heaviest stone that the devil can throw at a man. It is a bugbear to the imagination, and, though we do not believe in it, it still haunts our apprehensions.
    William Hazlitt (1778–1830)
