Unusual Wildlife Finds
On August 7, 2006 a man fishing for catfish at the Falls caught an octopus that measured six feet from the tips of its tentacles. This odd occurrence was reported in the Louisville Courier-Journal that noted that other strange and out of place animals like alligators, crocodiles and piranha-like tropical fish had also been found at the Falls of the Ohio. Zachary Treitz, a 21-year-old Louisville college student, admitted he had put the octopus there after purchasing it dead from a local seafood shop for a film project.

“Russian forests crash down under the axe, billions of trees are dying, the habitations of animals and birds are layed waste, rivers grow shallow and dry up, marvelous landscapes are disappearing forever.... Man is endowed with creativity in order to multiply that which has been given him; he has not created, but destroyed. There are fewer and fewer forests, rivers are drying up, wildlife has become extinct, the climate is ruined, and the earth is becoming ever poorer and uglier.”
—Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (18601904)
“In England if something goes wrongsay, if one finds a skunk in the gardenhe writes to the family solicitor, who proceeds to take the proper measures; whereas in America, you telephone the fire department. Each satisfies a characteristic need; in the English, love of order and legalistic procedure; and here in America, what you like is something vivid, and red, and swift.”
—Alfred North Whitehead (18611947)
