Explosive Child

Explosive Child

Explosive children, or explosive kids, are children and adolescents described by Dr. Ross Greene—in his books The Explosive Child (1998; 2001; 2005) and Lost at School (2008) as being compromised in the skills of flexibility/adaptability, frustration tolerance, and problem solving, resulting in frequent and sometimes severe temper outbursts and noncompliance. Dr. Greene also delineated a treatment model called Collaborative Problem Solving for helping such youth in families, schools, and restrictive therapeutic facilities. First described in The Explosive Child by Dr. Ross W. Greene, the terms explosive kids or explosive children was also used a few times in The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Famous quotes containing the words explosive and/or child:

The indications are that swearing preceded the development of cursing. That is, expletives, maledictions, exclamations, and imprecations of the immediately explosive or vituperative kind preceded the speechmaking and later rituals involved in the deliberate apportioning of the fate of an enemy. Swearing of the former variety is from the lips only, but the latter is from the heart. Damn it! is not that same as Damn you!
    Ashley Montagu (b. 1905)

Belonging to a group can provide the child with a variety of resources that an individual friendship often cannot—a sense of collective participation, experience with organizational roles, and group support in the enterprise of growing up. Groups also pose for the child some of the most acute problems of social life—of inclusion and exclusion, conformity and independence.
    Zick Rubin (20th century)
