The conference is organized around six key themes: • cascading disasters; • the intersection of the built and natural environments; • disasters as mechanisms of ecosystem change; • rethinking recovery and expanding the vision of mitigation; • human behavior and its consequences; and, • "no regrets" resilience.

These themes will be addressed in eight plenary sessions, ten keynote addresses, 23 breakout workshops, and 24 symposia.

Famous quotes containing the words resilience, disasters, annual and/or confer:

Toddlers who don’t learn gradually about disappointment lose their resilience through lack of practice in give-and-take with other people’s needs. They can become self-centered, demanding, and difficult to like or to be with.
    Alicia F. Lieberman (20th century)

The formula for achieving a successful relationship is simple: you should treat all disasters as if they were trivialities but never treat a triviality as if it were a disaster.
    Quentin Crisp (b. 1908)

In soliciting donations from his flock, a preacher may promise eternal life in a celestial city whose streets are paved with gold, and that’s none of the law’s business. But if he promises an annual free stay in a luxury hotel on Earth, he’d better have the rooms available.
Unknown. Charlotte Observer (October 6, 1989)

To confer dignity, forgive. To express contempt, forget.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)
