An EMV transaction has the following steps:

  • Application selection
  • Initiate application processing
  • Read application data
  • Processing restrictions
  • Offline data authentication
  • Cardholder verification
  • Terminal risk management
  • Terminal action analysis
  • First card action analysis
  • Online transaction authorisation (only carried out if required by the result of the previous steps; mandatory in ATMs)
  • Second card action analysis
  • Issuer script processing.
