The Electoral district of Melbourne is an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It is currently based around the localities of Carlton, North Carlton, Melbourne, East Melbourne, West Melbourne, North Melbourne, Parkville, Newmarket, Kensington and Flemington, and includes Melbourne University. The district has been in existence since 1856 (it was abolished in 1859 and reestablished in 1889).
Since 1908, the district has been traditional Labor territory. It became a marginal seat at the 2002 state election when Dr Richard DiNatale of the Greens came to within 2% of unseating the current member, Labor cabinet minister Bronwyn Pike. DiNatale and Pike were candidates again at the 2006 state election, Pike retained the seat by a margin of 1.93%.
Pike won the seat again at the 2010 Victorian election. Pike announced her resignation on 7 May 2012 which triggered a Melbourne by-election to occur on 21 July. The seat was retained by Labor.
