Ego Reduction

The concept of ego reduction occurs in several contexts. The term is predicated on the use of Sigmund Freud's concept of the ego to describe the conscious adult self.

Ego reduction has been used

  • as a goal in Alcoholics Anonymous
  • as a concept in BDSM play, as in entering "subspace"
  • as a concept in attaining religious humility.

Famous quotes containing the words ego and/or reduction:

Since [Rousseau’s] time, and largely thanks to him, the Ego has steadily tended to efface itself, and, for purposes of model, to become a manikin on which the toilet of education is to be draped in order to show the fit or misfit of the clothes. The object of study is the garment, not the figure.
    Henry Brooks Adams (1838–1918)

The reduction of nuclear arsenals and the removal of the threat of worldwide nuclear destruction is a measure, in my judgment, of the power and strength of a great nation.
Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)
