Big Room Inc. has filed a 'community-designated' application for .eco. Big Room - a Certified B-Corporation based in Vancouver, Canada - began coordinating with the environmental community on .eco in 2008. More than fifty environmental groups - including the world's largest - now support Big Room's application. Partners include WWF, Greenpeace, IUCN, Green Cross, WBCSD, 350.org, and TckTckTck, among others.
The environmental community is represented in Big Room's .eco application via an independent not-for-profit organization called the Dot Eco Global Community Organization. That organization acts as the community hub for .eco policy-making. The organization has contracted Big Room Inc. to seek to operate .eco on behalf of the environmental community. It is Co-chaired by WWF and the Akatu Institute. The United Nations Environment Programme, the United Nations Department for Economic and Social Affairs, and the United Nations Global Compact have observer roles and support a community-based approach for .eco.
The Dot Eco Global Community Organization has agreed to a multi-stakeholder approach to administering .eco that is designed to advance the environmental community's goals, in particular sustainable development. This includes safeguards designed to reduce greenwashing and reward good environmental performance.
