Dwyer Middle School - Student Honors

Student Honors

Students gain recognition is numerous ways for their excellence. A Student of the Month is chosen by a teacher each month, and a Student of the Month Reception is held every second Thursday of the month.

Each quarter students earn Honor Roll in either the Distinguished Honor Roll (3.8 GPA and up), the Honor Roll (3.4 GPA to 3.79 GPA), and On a Roll for student who show marked improvement from one quarter to the next.

The Judy Roy/Connie Alvarez chapter for the National Junior Honor Society has been established at Dwyer. Students who maintain a 3.7 cumulative GPA by the end of 7th grade may be invited to join by faculty recommendation for scholarship, character, leadership, service, and citizenship. Each year the most exemplary National Junior Honor Society members are elected to represent this organization in an executive council. The current members in office are Varsha Midha (president), Madison Hokans-Csurilla (vice president), and Jett Wooten (secretary).

The end-of-the-year Honors Picnic recognizes students who, during the first three quarters of the school year, earn no U marks in citizenship or work habits, a GPA each of those quarters of 3.40 or higher, and no more than one N mark per quarter. The picnic, sponsored by Dwyer's PTSA, is held during both lunch periods on an unspecified date in May at Lake Park.

Positive Referrals are given out from teachers, staff members, and administrators to students. These are handed to students when “we catch them doing something right!”. Once a student has 3 positive referrals, he/she can turn these into the front office for an exchange raffle ticket. On the last day of the quarter, multiple names are called for students who have entered their raffle tickets for a prize.

At the end-of-the-year 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony, special recognition is often given to eighth grade students who have achieved the following outstanding honors. The Trustees Award: The members of the Board of Trustees of the Huntington Beach City School District recognize the most outstanding student based on total grade point average, standardized achievement test scores, citizenship, and work habits during the three years as a student at Dwyer Middle School. The Presidents Education Award: Any student who, during his/her years at middle school, has earned a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) through the first semester of eighth grade and has achieved in the 85th percentile or higher in math or reading on a standardized achievement test, will receive the President’s Education Award. Perfect Attendance: Students earn this award only if they have attended every class all three years and have no tardies. Top Boy and Girl: One boy and one girl is recognized for overall academic excellence, outstanding citizenship, and leadership at the school. Top Boy and Girl Athlete: One boy and one girl is recognized for overall superior athletic ability and sportsmanship. Top Student in Math (the Lisa Lim Award), Top Students in Science, 4.0 Students: Recognition for an extremely rare feat - perfect 4.0 cumulative Grade Point Average for all 3 years at Dwyer, and the National Junior Honor Society: Recognition is given to 8th graders who are members of NJHS.

Famous quotes containing the words student and/or honors:

The roaring alongside he takes for granted,
and that every so often the world is bound to shake.
He runs, he runs to the south, finical, awkward,
in a state of controlled panic, a student of Blake.
    Elizabeth Bishop (1911–1979)

    My heart’s subdued
Even to the very quality of my lord.
I saw Othello’s visage in his mind,
And to his honors and his valiant parts
Did I my soul and fortunes consecrate.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
