Dick Bertel - Radio's Golden Age

Radio's Golden Age

At WTIC, Bertel created The Golden Age of Radio, a monthly radio program featuring interviews with radio actors, writers, musicians, producers and engineers from the early days of radio. It was first broadcast in April 1970, and three years later Bertel explained his interview methods: "I try to get something about the person before I interview him or her. If an author, I try to get the book and read it, and try to drop a little comment about something few people would know of the person. I also try to sit down with a guest a little beforehand. I don't believe in a cold interview, unless it's straight news." The series continued until 1977, a total of 89 shows, and all those shows can now be heard on the web.

Famous quotes containing the words golden age, radio, golden and/or age:

The whole body of what is now called moral or ethical truth existed in the golden age as abstract science. Or, if we prefer, we may say that the laws of Nature are the purest morality.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Local television shows do not, in general, supply make-up artists. The exception to this is Los Angeles, an unusually generous city in this regard, since they also provide this service for radio appearances.
    Fran Lebowitz (b. 1950)

Moderation has been called golden by all the sages, which is to say precious, praised by all, and everywhere laudable. Go through the Bible: you will discover that those who requested moderation never had their prayers rejected.
    François Rabelais (1494–1553)

At its best our age is an age of searchers and discoverers, and at its worst, an age that has domesticated despair and learned to live with it happily.
    Flannery O’Connor (1925–1964)
