As Transport Minister, Devant Maharaj announced that one of his top priorities was to realise a promise to build a new airport in Couva, Central Trinidad,. a mere 10 miles from the country's existing airport, also in Central Trinidad at Piarco. Maharaj stated that the airport would initially handle domestic flights. No plans were announced to offer flights from Couva to Piarco.
