Composition
"Denial" is a pop song that incorporates elements of soft rock and Europop. Instrumentation consists of a guitar, keyboard and drums. The song samples the hook from The Gossip's single, "Standing in the Way of Control. A journalist from Entertainment Ireland described "Denial" as "garden-variety pop". Nick Levine of Digital Spy characterised the song's verses as "elastic soft rock", and the chorus as "shimmering", "melancholic" and "harmony-drenched". According to Fraser McAlphine of BBC, the staccato verses are "juxtaposed with the smooth, harmonious bridge and chorus". Kim Dawson of Daily Star noted that the song's bassline is reminiscent to that featured on "One Minute" by Kelly Clarkson. The song contains a middle eight which is sung by Range, which begins with her singing "I see the way the wind blows like open minds for us".
