Hyde Park
At the age of twenty-five Burton was commissioned by the Office of Woods and Forests to carry out a series of works intended, in the words of John Summerson "to bring Hyde Park within the monumental orbit of the palace". He laid out paths and driveways, designed a series of lodges, and an Ionic screen and triumphal arch at Hyde Park corner. These last two originally formed a single composition, designed to provide a monumental transition between Hyde Park and Green Park. although the arch was later moved. His other work for the Office of Woods and Forests included the elaborate Parliamentary Stables at Westminster.

Famous quotes containing the word park:
“Borrow a child and get on welfare.
Borrow a child and stay in the house all day with the child,
or go to the public park with the child, and take the child
to the welfare office and cry and say your man left you and
be humble and wear your dress and your smile, and dont talk
back ...”
