Banker's Birthday Week 2008: Books and Cards

For the five episodes from 12 May to 16 May 2008, the Banker celebrated his birthday week. At the side of the studio, a fireplace stood with a mantelpiece. On the mantelpiece lay four birthday cards, one of the birthday cards was sent by the Banker's mother and contained a £5 book token. The other three cards the Banker sent himself and contained nothing, except a "Happy Birthday to me" message. If the player managed to pick the card with the £5 book token, then the player would receive an offer after every box opened in the final round. If the player picked one of the "Happy Birthday to me" cards, then nothing was affected. But, if during the game the player managed to produce an all blue or an all red round, then the Banker would reveal one of the cards that does not have the token in it.

On 16 May, the final day of the themed week, the Banker threw a party in the studio, which was suitably decorated for the occasion, and every contestant was dressed in a fancy dress costume with Edmonds dressed up as Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. 11 out of 16 members of the 1p club were also present, and during each phone call from the Banker, they received party food such as sausages on sticks, jelly and ice cream. However, at the end, the Banker sent them each a bill, charging £9.50 for the service.

Famous quotes containing the words banker, birthday, week, books and/or cards:

The prairies were dust. Day after day, summer after summer, the scorching winds blew the dust and the sun was brassy in a yellow sky. Crop after crop failed. Again and again the barren land must be mortgaged for taxes and food and next year’s seed. The agony of hope ended when there was not harvest and no more credit, no money to pay interest and taxes; the banker took the land. Then the bank failed.
    Rose Wilder Lane (1886–1968)

Since mothers are more likely to take children to their activities—the playground, ballet or karate class, birthday parties—they get a chance to see other children in action.... Fathers usually don’t spend as much time with other people’s kids; because of this, they have a narrower view of what constitutes “normal” behavior, and therefore what should or shouldn’t require parental discipline.
    Ron Taffel (20th century)

    How pleasant is Saturday night,
When I’ve tried all the week to be good,
And not spoke a word that was bad,
And obliged everyone that I could.
    Nancy Sproat (1766–1827)

An author who speaks about his own books is almost as bad as a mother who talks about her own children.
    Benjamin Disraeli (1804–1881)

The world is a puzzling place today. All these banks sending us credit cards, with our names on them. Well, we didn’t order any credit cards! We don’t spend what we don’t have. So we just cut them in half and throw them out, just as soon as we open them in the mail. Imagine a bank sending credit cards to two ladies over a hundred years old! What are those folks thinking?
    Sarah Louise Delany (b. 1889)
