David Jewett

David Jewett

Colonel David Jewett was an American, accused of piracy by both the USA and Portugal, who played a notable role in the history of the sovereignty dispute between Great Britain and Argentina. He commanded the pirate Frigate Heroína that visited the Falkland Islands (Spanish: Islas Malvinas) in 1820, raised the first Argentine flag on the islands, and claimed the islands for the United Provinces of South America (one of the precursor states of Argentina),. Argentine authors including José María Rosa claim he was ordered to do so by Manuel de Sarratea but other researchers such as Pascoe and Pepper point out there is no documentary evidence to support this. He did not inform Argentina in his report.

Famous quotes containing the words david and/or jewett:

When an Indian is burned, his body may be broiled, it may be no more than a beefsteak. What of that? They may broil his heart, but they do not therefore broil his courage,—his principles. Be of good courage! That is the main thing.
    —Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The thing that teases the mind over and over for years, and at last gets itself put down rightly on paper—whether little or great, it belongs to Literature.
    —Sarah Orne Jewett (1849–1909)
