David Jewett
Colonel David Jewett was an American, accused of piracy by both the USA and Portugal, who played a notable role in the history of the sovereignty dispute between Great Britain and Argentina. He commanded the pirate Frigate Heroína that visited the Falkland Islands (Spanish: Islas Malvinas) in 1820, raised the first Argentine flag on the islands, and claimed the islands for the United Provinces of South America (one of the precursor states of Argentina),. Argentine authors including José María Rosa claim he was ordered to do so by Manuel de Sarratea but other researchers such as Pascoe and Pepper point out there is no documentary evidence to support this. He did not inform Argentina in his report.

Famous quotes containing the words david and/or jewett:
“I hardly know an intellectual man, even, who is so broad and truly liberal that you can think aloud in his society. Most with whom you endeavor to talk soon come to a stand against some institution in which they appear to hold stock, that is, some particular, not universal, way of viewing things. They will continually thrust their own low roof, with its narrow skylight, between you and the sky, when it is the unobstructed heavens you would view.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“Tact is after all a kind of mind reading.”
—Sarah Orne Jewett (18491909)
