Dothard had an on and off relationship with Julie Patterson for nine years. He had two sons. Prior to his death he had been working as a personal trainer.
Dothard died in his sleep on July 22, 2009 at his home in Smyrna, Georgia. Steele had complained of feeling unwell the same evening. The cause of death was later determined as a brain aneurysm.
