Cregagh - Lower Cregagh Road

Lower Cregagh Road

At its lower stage the Cregagh Road largely continues in the same vein as the Woodstcok Road, being lined with several shops, including branches of Tesco and Iceland. This area also has a number of churches, specifically Cregagh Methodist Church, Cregagh Presbyterian Church and the Salvation Army's Belfast Temple. The Harding Memorial Primary School is also located on the road, having been established in 1913.

Just off the Cregagh Road are two locally well-known sporting venues, Cregagh Cricket Club and Malone Rugby Club. While having separate facilities, they are situated on the same road, namely Gibson Park Avenue (also known locally as 'Daddy Winkers Lane'). Cregagh Cricket Club celebrated its centenary in 2006. The cricket ground is also used by Northern Amateur Football League club Orangefield Old Boys' Association F.C. and is part of Cregagh Sports Club, effectively a merger of the cricket and football clubs, with both sharing the same Gibson Park Avenue facilities. This alliance was concluded in the early 1980s, with the two clubs being previously unconnected. Ravenhill Stadium the home of Ulster Rugby lies a short distance away, about halfway between the Cregagh Road and the Ravenhill Road to the east.

Famous quotes containing the word road:

In the fevered state of our country, no good can ever result from any attempt to set one of these fiery zealots to rights, either in fact or principle. They are determined as to the facts they will believe, and the opinions on which they will act. Get by them, therefore, as you would by an angry bull; it is not for a man of sense to dispute the road with such an animal.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)
