The Australian public found out about the case in 1907 when Witton returned to Australia and published his story, Scapegoats of the Empire. The Australian government felt so strongly about this case that it insisted that none of its troops would be tried by the British military during World War I. The official court records have never been found, prompting accusations of a British cover up.
